We are preparing for our Christmas Concert on 10th December. This is an exciting new venture for us, in which we are teaming up with Clare Edwards' choir Notorious to perform Mozart's Requiem at Ladywood ARC. We worked with Clare on The City Sings last year, and expect this will be just as enjoyable. But it is a big score with lots to learn to play. Check out the awesome teaser video on YouTube!

Our previous concert was held on Friday 15th July 2010 in the church of St Mary, Bearwood High Street. The programme included:

  • Fantasia on 'Greensleeves' R Vaughan Williams
  • Waltz: 'Gold und Silber' F Lehar
  • Pavane pour une infant défunte M Ravel
  • Overture: Fingal's Cave F Mendelssohn Bartholdy

plus a feature from our very own Harborne Wind Quintet. The quintet played Three Dances by Bayliss and Divertimento No 8 by Mozart. The evening was enjoyed by all present, concluding a very pleasant Summer Term of music making.

   Who are we?

Harborne Orchestra is an independent community orchestra based in the Harborne district of Birmingham, England. The players are of all ages and ability. Rehearsals take place weekly during term time in preparation for three concerts a year.

In addition to the three concerts a year, players from the orchestra make appearances at local events and functions. Recent concerts have included performances by small ensembles from the orchestra. This is a feature we hope to continue as it lets members rehearse a different type of repetoire and gives them the opportunity to showcase their talent!

   A Brief History

The Harborne Orchestra was founded around 1940 as a Community Orchestra. Over the following years they have practised and played concerts in and around Harborne, bringing pleasure to many people. For many years the Orchestra was part of the Local Adult Education courses offered by Birmingham City Council but since 2002 it has been an independent Orchestra.

The Orchestra's aims are for members to enjoy playing music together as well as performing three concerts a year. Members are of all ages and abilities and the music played reflects that, offering a spectrum of challenge and stimulation. The repertoire will vary over time in order to broaden the range of music played and to help members improve their playing. Rehearsals take place at the Queen Alexandra College for the Blind on Court Oak Road, Harborne; more information, links to maps and transport information is available here.
